Frequently Asked Questions
What is a psychologist?
A psychologist is someone who is trained to support people through a wide range of emotional and mental health challenges. This might include things like anxiety, low mood, stress, trauma, or feeling stuck in patterns that are hard to shift. My role is to work alongside you to better understand what’s going on and help you find ways forward that feel meaningful and manageable.
What happens in the first session?
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. The first session is really about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what’s been going on for you, what’s brought you here, and what you’d like to get out of therapy. There’s no pressure to share everything straight away—we go at your pace.
How long are sessions and how often will I come?
Sessions are usually 50 minutes. Many people start with weekly or fortnightly sessions to build some momentum, and then space things out over time. We’ll figure out together what feels right for you.
Do I need a referral?
You’re welcome to book in without a referral. If you’d like to access a Medicare rebate, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP or psychiatrist. You can also access an Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan from your GP.
What are the fees?
Sessions typically cost $285. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan or an Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan, Medicare can provide a rebate for part of the session cost. The current rebate is $145.25 (if you have hit your Medicare safety net this will increase). Private health funds can be used if you have utilised your sessions under Medicare. Feel free to reach out if you have questions about current fees.
How many sessions will I need?
This really depends on what you’re hoping to work on. Some people come for a handful of sessions around a specific issue, while others find it helpful to engage for longer. We’ll check in regularly to make sure the work feels useful and aligned with your goals.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes—what you share in sessions is kept private. There are a few exceptions (for example, if there are serious safety concerns or legal requirements), but I’ll explain these clearly so you know exactly where you stand.
What types of therapy do you use?
I draw on a range of evidence-based approaches and tailor things to suit you. This might include Schema Therapy, Focal Psychodynamic Therapy for Eating Disorders or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Most importantly, I focus on what actually feels helpful and relevant for you—not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Can I use NDIS funding?
If you’re self-managed or plan-managed, you may be able to use your NDIS funding towards your session cost. If you’re unsure, feel free to get in touch and we can figure it out together.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
To help keep appointments available for everyone, I ask for at least 48 business hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Changes made within this timeframe will incur the full session fee.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes—sessions can be done via secure video or phone. Some people prefer the flexibility of telehealth, while others like coming in person. You’re welcome to choose what works best for you.
How do I get started?
You can reach out via email to book an appointment or ask any questions.
